ORIBA: A COMMUNITY IN SQUALOR, SURROUNDED BY RICHES

Kingsley Momoh

Lying by the Lagoon is a community blessed with lush green vegetation called Oriba. Guguru FM crew got access to the community via a canoe ride from Itokin along the Ikorodu/Ijebu Ode expressway near Ikorodu. Oriba according to the indigenes was founded in the 1600s. However, after going round the community with our cameras, taking pictures, it was clearly obvious that the community has suffered neglect due to so many indices.
Oriba lacks every form of functional social amenities that dot the nooks and crannies of Lagos state; the centre of excellence. For a visitor who notices two electricity transformers located in the comunity, one would think that there is electrical power supply to the community. However, it was reliably gathered that the electric poles, cables and transformers were mere display of the seemingly slap on the faces of the members of the community. They say since the installation of the electrification projects which were done with fanfare, power supply to the village has been zero.

Primary School
The community has a primary school which we visited and what we saw shocked us. The single block primary school of about four classrooms is dilapidated and unfit for humans to use as classrooms. The school is nearly part of a forest closely behind it and it was learnt that teachers posted to the community refuse to come to work there in Oriba as a result of the lack of social amenities. As noted earlier, the only access to the town for now is the water way which is poorly run by the locals. The canoe ride for Guguru FM crew was everything unsafe. The passengers and the operators were without life jackets and the ride took about 45 minutes to the village. The situation in the secondary school which was divided into the junior and senior isn't much different.

Only Source Of Water In Oriba Primary School
Oriba has a building neatly painted which is supposedly the primary health care centre is an empty building with farming going on in the compound. We were told that that the centre lacked equipment and staff. We were told that due to this fact, pregnant mothers patronize the local midwife andthose who try going ot the Epe general hospital end up losing the child, the mother or both due to the distance and access road.

We were also shocked to find out that the people of Oriba rely on the supply of pure water in sachet from neighbouring town of Itokin for drinking. And it is transported via the water ways. The well we saw near the primary school has dirty water in it.
As if adding insult to the injury is the fact that the only road that could have facilitated movement in and out of the community is not a path for normal vehicles. We sought to see the road that used to serve as the access way to the community via land and were taken to a swampy portion of the village. The only indicators of road are the double care tyre path that has been covered by tall grasses that leads to the 'swamp' which we were told is also part of the road that leads to Oriba to other places like Epe, Ibeju Lekki etc.

Most of the building are looking like shanties because of the impossible cost of transportation via the River from Itokin along the Ikorodu/Ijebu Ode expressway which is the only way to the community. Transporting building materials to Oriba is indeed, expensive.
The Baale, Chief Olisa of Oriba land, Mufutau Lasisi Alafin who was installed in 2005 has not received his official staff of office from the state government till date, a situation which hampers easy representation at the governor's office.
Oriba People During The Press Conference

It is a surprise that a community like this exists in Lagos state which is the cynosure of all other states in Nigeria. Oriba residents live like aliens in their country.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the community the Aare of Oriba town Adesegun Hassan noted that it is no longer a thing of doubt that Oriba village is being sidelined in the scheme of the development strides going on in Lagos state. The community has suffered neglect by various governments and he urged the present government led by his excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to come to the aid of the community which is in Epe local government area, the home town of the governor.

Speaking further, the chief pointed out that Oriba produces Palm kernel, charcoal, cassava, plantain among other food products which are in exportable proportions but with the absence of an access road, Oriba farmers are like those who wink in the dark. He asked that if it would be to the benefit of Oriba, they should be excised to another local government and removed from Epe local government which they say has not been of any beneficial to them. He claims that Oriba which has been in existence since the 17th century even before Epe has been a subject of neglect and disregard.

They described an instance when an empowerment program was held in Epe without the inclusion Oriba people as a recent pointer to the fact of the neglect and disregard of Oriba by Epe local government.

Going round the town, it is evident that the community is in dire need of many things to make them feel part of the centre of excellence.

FEATURE: The 2016 Eghogho Festival Auchi, Edo State.

Nex week, the good people of Auchi will be playing host to the world as they celebrate the second edition of the Auchi Eghogho festival, a festival that is designed to fuse tradition with modernity. The term “Eghogho”, connotes joy, felicitation, merriment, fun, happiness in the Auchi dialect. The Eghogho festival brings all Auchi sons and (daughters) that have been initiated into manhood from the inception of Auchi Kingdom together.
The festival which is intended to celebrate the Auchi manhood culture, also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Auchi people through food, music, fashion, language, religions and arts. It provides a platform for celebration, reunion and interaction amongst all the various age-groups towards reigniting the common cultural legacy that binds the Auchi people together. The festival is designed to use the Auchi age-group/manhood institution to reawaken some of the rapidly eroding cultural legacies (that do not contradict modern day religious practices) of our forebears

FEATURE: Ambrose Alli & Denied Justice

Do you remember this Legend of Bendel?

He is Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli, the Ezomo of Ekpoma. He was Governor of Bendel state (now Edo and Delta states) from October 1979 - October 1983. He was arrested and brutalized by Buhari's illegal military government and then sentenced for forever in prison for developing Bendel State and that HE DECIDED TO PUSH FOR RESOURCE CONTROL and creation of additional LGAs for Edo and Delta States at the time when it was forbidden to talk about the subject. Till date he is still officially a felon with successive governments looking the other way round when it comes to matters of Alli who founded AAU, Delsu, Ekiadolor, and about 200 institutions across Edo and Delta States. There is no one living who can genuinely hold a guilt against Ambrose Alli for either corruption or ineptitude but Buhari jailed him and his VERDICT OF GUILTY has not been liefted. The Family of Alli has informed me that they want that verdict to be cancelled. they want JUSTICE for the innocent. If you asked me, that is not asking for too much.
Since 2013 I have been on this matter. I shall not relent until justice is done. An injury to one is an injury to all. Next month, September 22, it would be 25 Years of Ambrose Alli's death and on that same day, he would have been 85 years old had Buhari not unlawfully, maliciously and wickedly incriminated jailed him after several trials that declared him guiltless were rejected by this same Buhari, leading to his untimely death at 60. The Professor of Medicine and former Governor of Bendel State died on his 60th birthday.
I raise this Post in deep pains, in Tribute to Ambrose Alli and to urge Edo and Delta States Governments to do something URGENTLY to honour the memory of this good man who gave up his life for the love of his people - now Edo and Delta States. And on that day, I urge the Edo State and Delta State govenments to ensure that the cloak of FELON that is currently used to wrap him even in death after 25 years shall be removed from the head of this man who is one of the best governors that have governed Nigeria. The Family rightly believs that a good name is better than riches hence they are seeking for justice, NOT PARDON, after 25 years. Please let us support them.
Show your Solidarity to this Cause to this Legend by LIKING & SHARING this post in both Edo and Delta States forums until it gets the desired attention of the governments and the people of these states and they do something.
There is something else you can do. Pick up your telephone and call the Senator representing the Edo Central Disctrict, Senator Odion Ugbesia and urge him to Move a motion to REMOVE THE VERDICT OF GUILTY FROM AMBROSE ALLI WHO TIME AND EVENTS HAVE REVEALED THAT HE WAS INNOCENT.
The Senator is a public officer and it is his duty to join His Excellency to fight for Alli. Call or SMS Senator Clifford Ordia these numbers 0803 840 3877, 0 806 631 1223 NOW, please!.
ALLI MUST BE FREED, EVEN IN DEATH!
It is well!

Chierika The Nigerian Olympian

That she has set firsts with her first appearance for her country at the olympics has become one of the highlights of the rio olympics. She has depicted something that lives deepdown in every Nigerian.

Definitely her exploits which was well followed by Nigerians and the globe has shown that despite the issues of conflicts as a result in difference in our tribes, religions and political leanings, Nigerians can be one if these divides are not resonated through selfishness by businessmen, politicians, religious fanatics et al.

Image result for chierikaHistory making Ukogu was born in Pennsylvania, USA on October 2, 1992. Born to immigrant parents from Nigeria, she is a graduate of Stanford University where she studied pre-med and rowed for Stanford’s women’s crew team till her graduation in 2014. She has been accepted into Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York City. This plans to continue schooling after the Olympic games.

Due to a lack of infrastructure, Chierika not only had to be selected for the team for Rio 2016 but also had to fund herself. She started a gofundme campaign in 2015 and successfully raised $15,000 to get herself equipped and transported to Rio, Brazil.

Some analysts have said she single-handedly created Nigeria’s rowing team, this is not far from truth. Considering the cost of equipment is quite steep – around N4.8 million by today’s naira.

This is what she wrote about herself.

My name is Chierika, Coco to many, Ukogu and I have been selected to represent Nigeria in the Women’s Single Scull event. It is my ultimate goal to be the 1st Nigerian to row at the Olympic Games.

I am currently training for 30 hours/week with the top athletes in the Philadelphia area under coaches at Vesper Boat Club and Conshohocken Rowing Club, while conducting women’s health research at the University of Pennsylvania.

I will compete at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France on Aug 30-Sept 6 and 2016 African Olympic Qualification Regatta in Tunis, Tunisia on Oct 5-7th in hopes of qualifying for Games.

I am not receiving any financial support from the Nigerian Rowing Federation, so my dream relies on your generousity! Money raised will go towards travel costs, entry fees, uniforms, boats, and anything needed to make the Olympics a reality! Please join me on my quest to make history in Rio.

My rowing career began in 2006 at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, and I was hooked as soon as I took my first stroke. Following high school, I attended Stanford University and competed at the D1 level while completing pre-med coursework. After graduating in 2014, I put medical school on hold to dedicate my time to training.

Image result for chierikaI am honored to have the chance to represent Nigeria in the 2016 Olympic Games. I have always felt strong ties to Nigeria as the daughter of Nigerian immigrants. In 2007, I founded a non-profit organization called Flip Flops for Africa and donated 10,000 pairs of flip flops to Nigerians in need. I hope that my athletic endeavors will inspire other Nigerians to take up rowing and experience the same joy I feel every time I’m on the water.

I have been so blessed throughout my rowing career, from the Mount to Stanford, Vesper Boat Club, and Conshohocken Rowing Club. I am proud to be a part of the long history of athletes who have raced for the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association and the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia. I am willing and able to put in the training to get to the next level, and I thank you for helping to make this dream a reality!
